Operations Manager - Waste Logistics & Fleet Operations Location: Leeds and Quarrington, with regional travel
Salary: £40,000 - £45,000 per annum
Contract: Permanent

The Opportunity We are looking for an experienced Operations Manager to lead regional waste logistics and fleet operations across Leeds and Quarrington.

This is a hands-on leadership role with responsibility for the safe, compliant and efficient operation of a large articulated fleet, including company-owned vehicles and subcontracted hauliers.

You will oversee a complex operation involving multiple operating centres, more than 100 employees and drivers, and a substantial fleet of articulated units, walking-floor trailers and associated transport assets.

The role combines transport compliance, health and safety, service delivery, operational planning and commercial performance.

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Fleet Management

• Lead day-to-day logistics and transport operations across Leeds and Quarrington.
• Plan drivers, vehicles and subcontracted resources against operational and customer demand.
• Manage articulated vehicles, walking-floor trailers and associated transport assets.
• Maximise vehicle availability and utilisation through effective planning.
• Work closely with fleet and workshop teams to maintain operational performance.
• Monitor service delivery, fuel performance, telematics, driver standards and transport costs.
• Maintain fleet inspection, maintenance and compliance schedules.

Transport Compliance

• Maintain compliance with Operator Licence undertakings and DVSA requirements.
• Ensure compliance with drivers' hours, Working Time Regulations and tachograph legislation.
• Lead transport, vehicle and safety incident investigations.
• Ensure corrective actions are identified and completed.
• Lead internal and external audits across transport, safety and environmental compliance.
• Conduct site inspections, operational audits and behavioural safety observations.
• Ensure appropriate risk assessments, safe systems of work and operating procedures are in place.

Subcontractor Management

• Manage a network of approved subcontracted hauliers.
• Ensure subcontractors meet legal, insurance, waste carrier, safety and compliance requirements.
• Review subcontractor performance, spend and service levels.
• Maintain appropriate contingency arrangements to support service delivery.

Leadership & Commercial Performance

• Lead and develop a large operational team.
• Create clear accountability for safety, service and operational performance.
• Manage budgets covering labour, fuel, subcontractors, fleet and maintenance.
• Identify opportunities to reduce costs and improve productivity.
• Support improvements in profitability and overall operational performance.
• Support contract mobilisation, customer retention and wider business growth.

Essential Requirements

• Proven experience leading a large-scale logistics or transport operation.
• Experience managing articulated vehicle fleets within a regulated environment.
• Strong knowledge of Operator Licence obligations and transport compliance.
• Multi-site operational management experience.
• Experience managing subcontracted haulage providers.
• Experience with operational budgets, cost control and P&L performance.
• Track record of improving safety, compliance, service and productivity.
• Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder-management skills.
• Practical, hands-on approach with sound commercial judgement.
• National Transport Manager CPC qualification.
• Full UK driving licence.
