The Belgian dredging specialist has built a name for itself in marine and river projects in its domestic market, France and the Netherlands. On the inland canal in Béthune, it is performing dredging work, using a specially-adapted 45t Liebherr R 938 crawler excavator, mounted on its GD I pontoon.
The Generation 8 R 938 is typically used on land for earthmoving applications. To get the right tool for this job, Ghent Dredging turned to Liebherr, who could offer a ‘one-stop shop’ approach, adapting the excavator as needed, with customer support provided by SOMPT in Belgium.

The R 938 features multi-user working attachments. The machine is equipped with a specially adapted boom and stick combination — an 8.7 m gooseneck boom and a 5.7 m stick — providing the necessary reach to the bottom of the canal. A load lug beneath the stick supports load lifting tasks. The excavator is stabilised with an 11.8t counterweight, with lashing eyes on the undercarriage help keep the machine in place on the pontoon.
The operator works from a hydraulically adjustable cab, for a clear view in all working conditions. Fresh air is supplied through an integrated air filtration system.
