United Infrastructure starts Bacton gas work

2 hours United Infrastructure has started work on an £11m programme of work to upgrade cathodic protection systems at the Bacton Gas Terminal, with completion expected in early 2028.

The work will be delivered in partnership with National Gas, and will enhance corrosion protection across key buried steel pipelines at the North Norfolk terminal, supporting long-term asset integrity and operational reliability.

Cathodic protection is a corrosion prevention technique, developed in the 19th century to protect copper hulled ships for the Royal Navy. Here it will be used to protect pipelines and other critical infrastructure buried in soil or submerged in water. By converting the structure into the cathode of an electrochemical cell, the system prevents corrosion before it can compromise performance or safety.

The works are being undertaken within a live gas environment, classified as an upper-tier site under HSE鈥檚 control of major accident hazard, or COMAH, regulations. This requires detailed planning, specialist engineering expertise and strict safety controls. United Infrastructure says that it brings significant experience in delivering asset health and integrity programmes across major UK gas terminals, including at St Fergus on the North East coast of Scotland.

A comprehensive Project Environmental Management Plan (PEMP) is in place to ensure compliance with ISO 14001 standards and minimise environmental impact.

Conor Bray, executive Director, energy, United Infrastructure, said: 鈥淲e are proud to be supporting National Gas with this important cathodic protection upgrade at Bacton Gas Terminal. Delivering works of this complexity on a live gas installation demands technical expertise, robust planning and an uncompromising focus on safety.

鈥淭his programme will enhance pipeline resilience and corrosion protection, helping to safeguard the long-term integrity of this nationally significant asset and supporting the UK鈥檚 secure and stable gas supply.鈥
