The sun rises underground

1 hour London Underground operator Transport for London has appointed SSE Solar Solutions to build, operator and maintain dedicated solar generation, as part of a pledge by to meet its full 1.16TWh energy use from renewable sources.

The plan will now see SSE Solar Solutions identify sites for 65,000MWh of generating capacity, targeting locations close to the TfL network, enabling direct connections rather than drawing on the grid. TfL is London鈥檚 largest user of electric power. The project will supply two thirds of the energy needed for the Victoria line, or the equivalent of the power used by 25,000 homes. It will reduce carbon emissions by 27,000t over 25 years.

The decision follows last summer鈥檚 award of TfL鈥檚 first power purchase agreement, which will be sourced from a new EdF Renewables solar facility with a load balancing battery energy storage system being built in Longfield, Essex. Ground investigations have recently begun on this project, and will continue into April.

The project will spur new construction demand and jobs. London deputy mayor of environment and energy, Mete Coban, said, 鈥淎s these new sites are selected, they will create green jobs, boost biodiversity, and supply clean power, relieving pressure on the National Grid as we continue to build a fairer, greener London for everyone.鈥

Nathan Sanders, managing director of distributed energy, SSE Energy Solutions, said:聽"SSE Energy Solutions is proud to be appointed by TfL to deliver renewable energy directly to the Tube via private-wire,聽supporting London鈥檚 2030 net zero ambition and TfL's corporate environment plan. We'll invest in, build, operate and maintain the projects, helping to decarbonise and manage price volatility while enabling potential savings for TfL.鈥澛

The move comes as TfL joins the 萝莉原创 Leadership Council in a push to decarbonise construction. The CLC鈥檚 five client commitments ask聽clients to include carbon considerations in their contracts; to reduce the carbon impacts of fossil fuels, concrete, and steel; and to adopt , the standard for managing whole-life carbon in buildings and infrastructure.
