Mercia Real Estate (MRE) is investing £32m to convert part of the 95,000 sq ft former HSBC office complex in Edgbaston into bedsits for 266 students. This initial phase is scheduled for practical completion in June this year.
It now has planning consent to increase the total number of beds to 395, taking the total project budget to £45m.
MRE recently appointed student accommodation manager Yugo to operate the building on completion.
MRE chief executive Samuel Clark said: “Redeveloping existing buildings and previously developed land sits exactly alongside our proven value-add strategy. Applying this ethos across both industrial and residential sectors, enabled by our capital partners, will continue in 2026.”
