Mr Bowman, 59, is the chief executive of technology company Smiths Group and was briefly chief executive of Scottish Power in 2006/07.聽
Between 1999 and 2005 he was chief executive of Allied Domecq. Other previous board appointments include British Sky Broadcasting Group, Scottish & Newcastle and Bass. 聽He has also been chairman of Liberty and Coral Eurobet.
Mr Bowman, an accountant by profession, was nicknamed 鈥楩irst Class Phil鈥� in 2008 after it was revealed that he had it written into his contract that he would travel only first class whenever the option was available.
