The appointment of McBains as project manager follows the recent announcement of Laing O鈥橰ourke as the main contractor for the 拢250m Sussex Cancer Centre.

The new five-storey building, at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, is part of Wave 1 of the New Hospitals Programme. It is expected to open in 2029, expanding the hospital鈥檚 capacity for cancer care three-fold, seeing 60,000 patients a year.

It will be built on the site of the former Barry Building, which until its recent demolition was the oldest hospital building in the country.

The Sussex Cancer Centre is the second phase of hospital trust鈥檚 three-stage 3Ts Redevelopment plan. The first stage, the Louisa Martindale Building, opened in 2023.

As part of the second stage, a new landscaped plaza will be created between the Louisa Martindale Building to connect the two developments.

The third and final stage will see the construction of a new service and logistics yard on the site of the current cancer department to improve campus-wide efficiency.

McBains previously delivered project management, cost management and NEC supervision services for the Louisa Martindale Building), as well as to the site enabling works for the stage two (Sussex Cancer Centre) project last year.

McBains associate director Hemant Sharma said: 鈥淲e鈥檙e thrilled to be continuing our involvement with the 3Ts Redevelopment. Having successfully delivered UHSussex鈥檚 Louisa Martindale Building, we鈥檝e already witnessed first-hand how new, modern healthcare facilities can truly transform patient experiences and staff wellbeing.鈥
