Liverpool Street Station is Britain鈥檚 busiest train station, with passenger numbers having tripled since its last redevelopment in 1991, 35 years ago, to 98 million in 2024/25.
And with passenger numbers forecast to grow by a further 35% in the next 15 years聽鈥� to 158 million a year by 2041聽鈥撀爐here is work to be done.
In fact, the approved plans are designed to give the station capacity to accommodate more than 200 million passengers a year.
As well as improving access to and circulation around the station, the Network Rail scheme includes new commercial, cultural and public spaces. 聽According to Network Rail, the plans are designed to turn Liverpool Street into a destination in its own right.
The 拢1bn plans were approved by the City of London Corporation on 10th February. City policy chairman Chris Hayward said: 鈥淭his redevelopment of Liverpool Street station is a major step forward for the Square Mile. It will support the City鈥檚 dynamic business ecosystem with state-of-the-art infrastructure, create new jobs and strengthen our position as a world鈥憀eading destination, while ensuring that residents, workers and visitors all benefit from a modern, inclusive and future鈥慺ocused transport hub.
鈥淎s competition among global cities increases, we must demonstrate our openness to new investment that will enhance our urban environment and Liverpool Street station will now continue to do just that.鈥�
Chairman of the City of London Corporation planning and transportation committee, Tom Sleigh, added: 鈥淓veryone likes an upgrade, and this astonishing improvement to Britain鈥檚 busiest train station is just that; a major improvement by every measure. The soaring brick arches and bold architecture will cement Liverpool Street鈥檚 status as a modern temple to transport.鈥�
Aecom is the consulting engineer on the scheme. Managing director Jo Streeten said: 鈥淎s lead engineer for the proposals, we have worked with our partners from the earliest stages to develop a design that has been shaped by detailed heritage, multi-disciplinary engineering and underpinned by robust environmental impact assessments.
