Galliford Try has begun construction of a £14m leisure centre scheme in Thornaby town centre for Stockon-on-Tees Borough Council.
A new two-storey facility will house a five-lane swimming pool, gym and sauna. There will also be enhancements to the internal layout and fitness spaces within the existing Thornaby Pavilion leisure centre next door.
A first-floor link bridge will connect the new building to the pavilion, while a new entrance and extended car park will provide 46 additional spaces. Works on the surrounding public realm are designed to further enhance accessibility and visitor experience.
The facility will be built on the site of a 1960s office block, Phoenix House, which had stood empty for a number of years before it was bought by the council using Town Deal funding and then demolished.
The new leisure centre is expected to open in summer 2027 and will be operated by Tees Active.
Jeremy Barnett, managing director for Galliford Try Building North East and Yorkshire, said: “The new leisure centre will provide high-quality sports and wellbeing facilities for local people while contributing to the ongoing regeneration of the town centre. We look forward to working collaboratively with all partners to bring this transformative project to life.”
