Palfinger, an Austrian manufacturer best known for its lorry loader cranes, has set up a strategic technology collaboration with Icon, a US pioneer in robotic 3D printing construction.
Palfinger said that the collaboration marks an important step in extending its expertise into large鈥憇ize robotics and digital manufacturing 鈥 鈥渙pening up new opportunities at the intersection of construction, automation and industrial production,鈥 it said.
The two companies plan to collaborate in exploring how robotic 3D printing can transform construction.
As part of the collaboration, Palfinger is contributing its crane technology to the Titan system, a large鈥憇ize robot system for placing concrete. Titan enables the automated printing of structures of up to 27 feet in height and supports multi鈥憀evel construction. The system is designed for continuous 24/7 operation and integrates modular components, stabilizers and crawler systems to ensure reliability, flexibility and cost efficiency.
Initial prototypes of the Titan system have already been tested, demonstrating readiness for industrial application. The solution significantly reduces building costs compared to conventional construction methods and enables faster project execution with fewer and safer labour requirements, it is claimed.
Palfinger chief operating officer Alexander Susanek said: 鈥淭his partnership with Icon demonstrates how Palfinger is systematically expanding its capabilities beyond traditional applications. By combining our expertise in large鈥憇ize lifting and handling systems with Icon鈥檚 pioneering 3D printing technology, we are opening up new industrial applications and strengthening our position in the field of large鈥憇ize robots and automation.鈥
He added: 鈥淏y transferring our expertise in lifting solutions, automation and system integration into robotic 3D printing, we are actively shaping the future of industrial construction. Partnerships like this allow us to turn innovation into scalable, real鈥憌orld solutions.鈥
